Spanish Varietals
December 2019
As you know, we’re all about exploration here at Cellar 503. We love our Pinot Noir but we also love the hundreds of other varietals planted in this state. Sure, Rhone style grapes grow well in the Willamette Valley, but Oregon’s diverse geography also allows us to grow grapes from other regions in the world.
This month we’re exploring Spanish varietals grown in Oregon. You’ve probably heard that Tempranillo is really making a name for itself in Southern Oregon. But did you know that a little bit of it is being grown here in the Willamette Valley? We’re excited to bring you some classically Spanish varietals this month that are done in a uniquely Oregon way.
Our first red is a Tempranillo from Holloran Vineyard, one of the few wineries in the Willamette Valley growing Tempranillo grapes. Our second red is a luscious Grenache from Southern Oregon’s Naumes Winery.
Our first white as an Albarino from club favorite J. Scott Cellars in Eugene. And our second white is a Verdejo from Red Lily Vineyards in Southern Oregon, one of very few to produce this wine in Oregon.
These wines will be perfect for warming up on a cold winter day!
